VTREC EXPANDS PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IN SHAH ALAM: EDUCATING THE PUBLIC AND SCHOOL CHILDREN ON VEHICLE THEFT

SHAH ALAM, 29 June 2024: The Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (VTREC) continues its partnership with Jabatan Pencegahan Jenayah dan Keselamatan Komuniti (JPJKK), Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) Shah Alam to promote public awareness about vehicle theft in Shah Alam, Selangor.  This series of mini-campaign took place in Shah Alam District.  This mini-campaign was intentionally developed with the goal to of raising awareness on vehicle theft, but also inculcate vigilance within primary students.

 

Adik Goh Hong Yu from SJK (C) Yuk Chai claimed the top spot for ‘Colouring Contest’ 2024 VTREC Public Awareness Mini Campaign on Vehicle Theft at AEON Mall Shah Alam, Selangor.  Prizes was presented by Sjn Hafiz Abdullah (third from left) with Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, VTREC Co-ordinator as among the witness (second from left), together was Encik Farid Akhmal Johan, VTREC Officer-in-Charge (4th from right).

 

YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, VTREC Coordinator, said that 12 automobiles were stolen every day in 2023.  “Ensuring that people to safeguard their vehicles from theft and recognising unsafe parking areas is crucial for improving their safety.”  The PDRM-VTREC Vehicle Theft Public Awareness Mini Campaign, positioned as an impactful initiative, effectively engages the public  in raising awareness and serves as a fundamental platform for empowering individuals and communities to drive meaningful change in attitudes and behaviours related to vehicle theft. YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid further stated that the stolen vehicle, particularly the motorbike, will be disassembled and the components will be sold in the market as used parts, which might put at risk of road accident to the person who purchased the stolen parts.

The campaign’s theme, “United Against Vehicle Theft,” attempts to raise public awareness and advocate for behavioural changes to protect vehicles.  This mini-campaign is an important forum for sharing knowledge and advising action, empowering people, communities, agencies, and other stakeholders to stand together against vehicle theft.  VTREC attracted full attention from the crowds who wanted to try the VTREC educational activities, prizes, and contests on offer.  The participants were not only allowed to demonstrate their approach for securing their vehicle during the VTREC educational game, but they were also given simulation-based training, which provides the public with hands-on learning experience to maximise retention.  They could gain valuable life experience by learning how to lock a car so that their vehicle is protected and does not become a target for theft.

The presence of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) during the VTREC campaign in Shah Alam demonstrates their constant dedication to community engagement and crime reduction.  By actively participating in this public awareness campaign, PDRM demonstrates its commitment to creating a safer environment for all citizens.  This engagement with VTREC is more than just a show of solidarity, it is a planned attempted to strengthen ties with the community, which is important to their goal.  Their omnipresence not only deters potential offenders, but also reassures the public that they are always vigilant.  This proactive approach alligns perfectly with PDRM’s slogan, ‘Polis dan Masyarakat Berpisah Tiada,’ emphasizing that the police and the people are inseparable partners in maintaining public safety.

Numerous engaging activities were organized to motivate the public to participate, support, and pledge their involvement in this mini-campaign.  One highlight was the ‘Wall of Engagement,’ where attendees could leave messages as reminders to avoid becoming victims of vehicle theft, fostering a sense of community awareness and responsibility.  To attract visitors interest, VTREC arranged interactive activities like the ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ which offered participants the chance to win prizes while learning about vehicle security.  Another popular activity was the ‘Steering Lock Educational Games,’ where participants were challenged to properly apply a steering lock in under three seconds, combining education with a fun, hands-on, experience.  These activities were designed not only to entertain but also impart valuable knowledge on vehicle theft prevention, making the campaign both informative and engaging.

A colouring contest, the main event of this mini-campaign, was organized for younger participants. The contest attracted up to 41 contestants aged 7 to 12 years.  Held at the same venue from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, the competition showcased the children’s creativity and skills on the provided drawing paper.  The young participants exhibited fierce competition, each demonstrating their unique artistic talents.  In addition to supporting their children, parents had the opportunity to receive a variety of complimentary souvenirs to take home.

As the mini-campaign  draws to an end, a prize-giving ceremony led by  YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, VTREC Coordinator, accompanied by Sjn Hafiz Abdullah and KPL Nordiana Ibrahim from IPD Shah Alam, and VTREC Executive Officers. Adik Goh Hong You from SJK (C) Yuk Chai clinched the title for this round of Colouring Contest.  As a first place winner, Adik Goh Hong You will bring home prizes consists of cash prize worth RM130.00, a VTREC t-shirt, a goodies bag, and a certificate. The first runner-up was claimed by Adik Nur Aaira Kamaliyah from SK Methodist. As first runner-up winner, Adik Nur Aaira Kamaliyah received RM100.00 cash prize, a VTREC t-shirt, a goodies bag, and a certificate. Second runner-up spot was secured by Adik Nurul Faqihah from SKSP, earning a prize of cash worth RM70.00, a VTREC t-shirt, a goodies bag, and a certificate.

For this round of the colouring contest, a special consolation prize has also been prepared to three winner.  A winner of special consolation prize received a cash prize worth RM50.00, VTREC t-shirt, a goodies bag, and a certificate.
