KUALA LUMPUR, 8 APRIL 2021: YDH Dato’ Dev Kumar a/l M M Sree, Deputy Director of CID, Bukit Aman officiating the Vehicle Theft Council of Malaysia (VTREC) and Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) Vehicle Theft Public Awareness Campaign 2021 at Nu Sentral Shopping Mall, Kuala Lumpur, today.

The event began with a welcome speech from the Co-ordinator of VTREC, Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid. In her speech, Puan Mas Tina notes that the campaign aimed to further reduce the rate of vehicle theft in country through public awareness and behaviour change in protecting their vehicle which reflects the campaign theme “PROTECT YOUR VEHICLE FROM THEFT”.

Puan Mas Tina records highest appreciation to PDRM in particular the Crime and Investigation Department (CID) for co-organise the campaign and all government agencies such as Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ), Kastam Diraja Malaysia (KASTAM) as well as non-government agencies such as Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM), Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) and PUSPAKOM Sdn Bhd (PUSPAKOM) for their contributions.

Puan Mas Tina said “the 2-month campaign will be brought to other strategic hot spot areas. Multiple programmes and contest are scheduled for public, both online and offline.” Puan Mas Tina also thanked YDH Dato’ Dev Kumar for officiating the campaign and everyone for their contributions and involvements either directly or indirectly that has brought everyone to the momentous event. Such a campaign like this without their support and commitment, today’s event would not be possible.

The launch then was graced by keynote and officiating address by YDH Dato’ Dev Kumar a/l M M Sree, Deputy Director of CID (Intelligence/Operation). During his speech, he thanked and congratulated VTREC for working closely with PDRM to drive down vehicle theft in the country. played by government agency and non-government agency such as PDRM and VTREC in combating vehicle theft. A strong collaboration between the two entities is much needed and should serve as important strategy to bring down vehicle theft rate. Nevertheless, strong support and inputs from various stakeholders on an on-going basis will further strengthen the initiatives to curtail crime of vehicle theft nationwide.

YDH Dato’ Dev Kumar highlighted that “there were 21,578 vehicle theft cases reported in 2020 compared with 30,868 cases in 2019, in 2020 vehicle theft has reduced by 30%. The number of stolen cars were 4,596 units, motorcycles 16,057 and lorries while, van and heavy vehicle 925 units”. He added that number of vehicle theft cases in the country had shown a decline each year.

He also mentioned that since 2016, as many as 1,215 syndicates members of vehicle theft have been charged under Crime Prevention Act (POCA) 1959. That number however excluded those members who had been charge in court for same offence. Out of that total, 753 who stole motorcycles, 422 who stole cars and the 40 who stole other vehicles.”

In closing, YDH Dato’ Dev notes that the launch of PDRM-VTREC Vehicle Theft Public Awareness Campaign 2021 will attract public attention to participate and to protect their vehicle also hoping that it will further reduce the rate of vehicle theft crime.

The event then continued with launch gimmick, memento presentation, visit to exhibitors’ booths, visit to awareness wall, press conference and participatory activities for attendees’ involvement. The SOP of COVID-19 was closely monitored throughout the event.
