Kuala Lumpur, 28 February 2024: VTREC Nationwide Public Vehicle Theft Awareness Campaign 2024 (Kempen Kesedaran Awam Kecurian Kenderaan VTREC 2024) had officially launched by YBhg Datuk Lokman Jamaan, Pengarah Kanan Penguatkuasa, Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ) at Sunway Velocity Mall, Cheras.
The campaign was strategically designed to diminish the incidence of vehicle theft in the country. By fostering public awareness and encouraging behavioural changes in safeguarding their vehicles, the campaign aligns with its theme, “United Against Vehicle Theft” which corresponds to the objectives of the campaign.
YBhg Datuk Lokman Jamaan, Acting Chairman of the Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC) cum Senior Director of the Enforcement Division Department of Road Transport Malaysia (RTD), who delivered the Keynote Address then officiated the event, said that thank you for VTREC efforts ingather the primary stakeholders to work together for the same reason which is reducing vehicle theft.
YBhg Datuk Lokman Jamaan, Acting Chairman of the Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC) cum Senior Director of the Enforcement Division at the Department of Road Transport Malaysia (RTD) delivered the Keynote Address then officiated the event. Themed “United Against Vehicle Theft”, centred on promoting togetherness among Malaysian and all stakeholders to combat vehicle theft and to increase the well-being of the people. He said that thank you for VTREC efforts ingather the primary stakeholders to work together for the same reason which is reducing vehicle theft. Being ‘UNITED” is the cornerstone of Malaysian to close rank and strengthen the co-operation in pressing further down the rate of crime of vehicle theft nationwide.
Welcoming Speech by YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, the Co-ordinator of Vehicle Theft Reduction of Council of Malaysia, (VTREC). She highlighted it was wonderful to see so may participants interested in and attending the Official Campaign, given that it was expected to have an event with 100 participants and it was delighted to have more than 100 participants turned up. It was also a great pleasure to see variety of stakeholders joining the event including media. She thanked all stakeholders for their active supports in respect to reducing crime of vehicle theft and the swift deploy of the event.

YBhg Datuk Lokman Jamaan stated that vehicle theft rates in Malaysia, across all vehicle types, including motorcycles, private cars, and commercial vehicles have decreased significantly by 89% from 38,322 units stolen in 2023 dropped to 4,352 units stolen in 2022. In 2013, a vehicle was stolen approximately every 14 minutes, contrasting with one vehicle every two hours in 2022. This remarkable reduction underscores the effectiveness of collaborative efforts involving the PDRM, JPJ, Customs Department, other government agencies, non-government agencies and insurance companies during the Press Conference.
The emphasis is on the continuous need for awareness campaigns to enhance vehicle theft prevention measures and reduce vulnerabilities. JPJ also committed to addressing various vehicle theft issues such as cloned vehicles, altered vehicle identities, and the use of fraudulent documents, through rigorous enforcement actions and preventive measures.

Besides VTREC Engagement and Interaction Booth, there were also Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah (JSJ), IPK Selangor, Bahagian Pencegahan Jenayah dan Keselamatan Komuniti (BPJKK) IPD Cheras, Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ) and PUSPAKOM Sdn Bhd participated by setting up exhibition booths to raise awareness about vehicle theft. They engaged with the public visitors, explaining the roles of each agency involved in combating vehicle theft.

In the afternoon, public engagement kicked off with various exciting events and performances, including Pocket Talk sessions, colouring competition, live singing performance, traditional dance and rhythmic gymnasium dance. The first Pocket Talk session was delivered by Encik Aniq Denial Fauzi. He shared insights of potential places for crime of vehicle theft and shared why vehicles can be vulnerable to theft.

The second Pocket Talk session was presented by Puan Marlyana Mansur. She discussed reasons why a vehicle could become a target for theft and provided tips on how to avoid falling victim to vehicle theft.

The third pocket talk session was presented by YBhg Dato’ Ooi Win Juat, Head Advisor & Marketing of PUSPAKOM. He explained about the definition of a cloned car and the method to detect it. He also advised to regularly do PUSPAKOM inspections to ensure vehicle’s roadworthiness.

Last but not least, the final Pocket Talk session was conducted by YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, Co-ordinator of Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC) where she shared statistics on frequently stolen vehicles for the year 2022. Each Pocket Talk was followed by a quiz to ensure that visitors were attentive and knowledgeable about the information being conveyed.

Intandemly, the public engagement resumed in the afternoon, begun with the public’s Engagement Wall, whereby the public to leave their pledge and advices on the Engagement Wall and the registration of Colouring Competition. Participants, consisting of primary school students aged 7 to 12, could enter the competition either online or by walking-in. The registration for Colouring Contest fills up fast as the response from the public, particularly the students were robust, nearly 100 participants entered the Colouring Competition, they came from all over Malaysia.

Each participant has begun coloring during the VTREC’s Colouring Contest at the United Agaist Vehicle Theft Campaign 2024, utilising their own techniques and creativity to vie for the first-place position.
Meanwhile, members of the public and parents in attendance had the opportunity to visit various booths. Not only did they show support for their children, but they also had the chance to bring home a variety of souvenirs and enjoying themselves with a number of educational games.
