Prevention of Vehicle Theft by Supporting Circular Economy – Mas Tina

YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, Co-ordinator of Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC) delivering her Keynote at the 13th Asian Automotive Environmental Forum (AAEF) 2024 – Moving Towards Circular Economy in conjunction with Malaysia Auto Show 2024 (the biggest Auto Show in Malaysia), presented the significant reduction in vehicle theft rate in Malaysia.

 

PUTRAJAYA, 24 May 2024:  The Malaysia Automotive Recyclers Association (MAARA) and co-organiser Malaysia Automotive Robotic and IoT Institute (MARii) with close co-operation and support from Japan Automotive Recyclers Association (JARA) organised the 13th Asian Automotive Environmental Forum (AAEF) 2024 in conjunction with Malaysia Auto Show 2024 on 22nd to 25th May 2024, Malaysia.

YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, Co-ordinator of Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC) was invited to be the Keynote Speaker to address the need to support the circular economy in preventing vehicle theft in particular the reuse and recycle of used vehicle spare parts.  In her speech she touches on diverging from the traditional linear model which characterised by a take, make and dispose process to sustainable process. The highlights of her speech was the important of establishment of a more sustainable vehicle parts to keep materials in use for as long as possible and products at the highest utility and value, to minimise waste and promote a sustainable use of used parts from unused vehicles including motorcycles, private cars and commercial vehicles, while addressing the environmental impact.

Promoting reused spare part not only providing more choices for users with better economy prospectives but also eliminating the opportunity for counterfeit products and fraudulence.

“Vehicle theft in Malaysia, based on insurance industry statistics has reduced tremendously as much as 91% (reduction by 34,813 stolen vehicles) for a timeline of 10-year from 2013 to 2023 of which all classes of vehicles such as motorcycles, private cars and commercial vehicles were also recorded reduction.  This is a success story that Malaysian should be proud of”, she said.

 

YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, Co-ordinator of Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC) explains on why used vehicle spare parts are necessity and prime.

 

“The success derived from a strong collaboration by all close stakeholders in combating vehicle theft nationwide. Nevertheless, we thanked the enforcement agencies especially the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) and Road Transport Department (RTD) and all close stakeholders including General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM), Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA), PUSPAKOM Sdn Bhd for their co-operation and relentless efforts to drive down vehicle theft rate in the country”, according to Mas Tina.

Mas Tina also highlighted that, “further reduction of vehicle theft rate can be achieved, in the event where more reused vehicle spare parts are legally available for sale, moreover with reasonable warranty.”

The 13th AAEF with theme “Moving Towards Circular Economy” was with the objective to create awareness amongst the automotive market players, especially the recyclers, on the role of circular economy in a sustainable development and the importance of preserving our environment and conserve biodiversity for better tomorrow.  It is in in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of protecting the planet.
